A highly recruited
high school football player was visiting
schools to try and find the best college for him. His first stop
was at Florida. When he got there, Urban Meyer immediately picked up
a golden telephone. After talking several minutes, he said, "Thank
you, God" and hung up. This shocked the young man. He asked the
coach what was so special about the golden phone. "Well, this phone
is a direct line to God. And God tells us whether or not new
recruits would be stars at our university. The athlete asked if he
could use the phone to ask God what college he should pick "Sure,
you can! But it's going to cost you $1,000. Calling Heaven ain't
cheap." The fellow didn't have that kind of money, so he moved
along.
His next stop was Auburn. Upon entering Tommy's office, Coach
Tubberville immediately picked up a golden telephone. After talking
several minutes,he said, "Thank you, God" and hung up. The boy
said, "Hey, I've seen those phones before. Can I use yours to call
God and ask what college I should pick?" Tommy said, "Sure, but
it's going to cost you $750. Calling Heaven isn't cheap.." Again,
not having that kind of money, the lad left.
His last stop was in Athens, Georgia. Upon arrival at the office,
Coach Richt picked up a golden telephone, talked to God, and
said, "Thanks," and hung up. The boy just had to use that phone, so
he said,"Coach, I really need to use that golden telephone so I can
call God and ask him which college I should choose. From Florida it
was going to cost me $1000. From Auburn they wanted $750. So how
much will it cost me to call Heaven from here in Athens?" The coach
smiled and said, "Nothing, son. It's a local call."

More Info on the 2005 Recruiting Class
Georgia recruits
• Donovan
Baldwin, 6-2, 175, DB, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (American Heritage): A Class
AAA all-state player in Florida, Baldwin intercepted 7 passes during his senior
season and returned 4 of them for touchdowns. He also returned 6 kickoffs for
touchdowns in his final year, including 2 in a playoff game.
• Roderick
Battle, 6-4, 250, DE, Atlanta (Douglass): The Georgia Sportswriters
Association defensive player of the year in Class AAAAA, also a defensive
captain who had 15 sacks, 25 quarterback pressures, 30 tackles-for-loss and 10
forced fumbles. Named to Superprep All-America and All-Dixie teams and will have
a chance to contribute this year.
• Jamar
Bryant, 6-2, 195, ATH, Hamlet, N.C. (Richmond): Named one of Scout.com's top
70 quarterbacks in America coming out of high school but is expected to play
wide receiver for the Bulldogs. He also could play safety, coach Mark Richt
said. Signed last year, but spent 2004 season at Hargrave Military Academy,
where he caught 5 passes for 89 yards.
• CJ
Byrd, 6-2, 180, S, North Augusta, S.C. (North Augusta): The marquee
defensive back of this class was the 2004 Gatorade South Carolina player of the
year was named best player by his teammates in the Shrine Bowl. Considered one
of country's top four safeties by Tom Lemming and Scout.com and could
play right away.
• Tripp
Chandler, 6-6, 230, TE, Woodstock (Woodstock): Rated the country's No. 20
tight end by Lemming and also a member of the Superprep All-Dixie Team. A member
of the Macon Touchdown Club's Super 7 team. Caught 27 passes for 538 yards and
eight touchdowns as senior. Faces logjam at tight end.
• Jamar
Chaney, 6-2, 215, LB, Ft. Pierce, Fla. (St. Lucie West Centennial): A Class
AAAA all-state player in Florida, recorded 16 tackles in the Outback Bowl High
School All-Star game. Had 68 tackles, 6 sacks and 3 interceptions in six games
his senior season. A member of the Superprep All-Dixie Team. Depth at his
position may force a redshirt season.
• Antavious
Coates, 6-4, 200, DB, Greenwood, S.C. (Greenwood): Recorded 21 tackles and 4
interceptions in four games as a senior before tearing the ACL in a knee on the
first play of the fifth game. Considered one of nation's top 25 safeties by
Scout.com and Rivals.com. Like Byrd, has a chance to play right away due to lack
of depth at safety.
• Joe
Cox, 6-1, 195, QB, Charlotte, N.C. (Independence): A Parade All-American and
the player of the year in North Carolina but won't play this year barring
catastrophe. Threw for state-record 66 touchdowns during his senior season and a
two-time MVP of the state title game. Threw for 3,983 yards as a senior after
4,509 yards as a junior.
• Darius
Dewberry, 6-4, 218, LB, Ft. Valley (Peach County): The Peach County native
was almost as highly thought of as in-state linebacker Tray Blackmon, who
signed with Auburn, but the Bulldogs will have to wait a while for Dewberry.
Barring a very unexpected development, he will spend next year at Hargrave
Military Academy and then re-sign with Georgia next year, once he is
academically eligible.
• Bryan
Evans, 5-11, 177, CB, Jacksonville, Fla. (Ed White): The shutdown cornerback
the Bulldogs were looking for has maybe the best chance of anyone to play right
away since his position is relatively easy to learn. Intercepted 5 passes and
returned 2 for touchdowns as a senior, while also rushing for 327 yards.
• Tavares
Kearney, 6-1, 205, LB, Tucker (Tucker): Was overlooked due to number of
linebackers this year and the fact that he didn't have a qualifying test score
until very late. Could be as good as any linebacker in the state this year.
Named Scout.com's No. 26 linebacker and had 14 sacks, 78 tackles and 51
quarterback hurries during his senior season.
• Mohamed
Massaquoi, 6-2, 191, WR, Charlotte, N.C. (Independence): The Parade Magazine
All-American could make immediate impact at position where true go-to player has
yet to emerge. Owns North Carolina state record for career receiving yards
(4,851), receiving yards as a senior (1,834), career touchdown catches (76) and
senior season touchdown catches (32).
• Corey
Moon, 6-5, 240, DE, Decatur (Decatur): Not as highly regarded as other
defensive line signees but has opportunity due to lack of depth. Recorded 220
tackles and 25 sacks in his last two seasons. Rated one of the top seven
defensive ends in the South by Scout.com.
• Michael
Moore, 6-2, 191, WR, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (N. Broward Prep): Set the Broward
County (Fla.) single-game receiving record as a junior and a senior. Caught 59
passes for 1,055 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, giving him 30 touchdowns
in final two prep seasons. Named Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel's offensive player
of the year as senior.
• Jeffrey
Owens, 6-3, 280, DT, Sunrise, Fla. (Plantation): Was ranked No. 12 defensive
tackle in country in a very good year for defensive tackles. Lemming thinks he
could be a player who contributes right away, providing depth in the middle for
the Bulldogs. Led his county in sacks with 14 and also had 74 tackles and 27
tackles-for-loss.
• Brandon
Sesay, 6-5, 250, DT, Atlanta (Douglass): Not as celebrated as Douglass High
teammate Roderick Battle but still among top 15 defensive tackles in
country by Scout.com. Recorded 17 tackles, 24 quarterback pressures, 15
tackles-for-loss and 8 forced fumbles in senior season.
• Ian
Smith, 6-3, 295, OG, Cartersville (Cartersville): Faces a logjam at
offensive guard but could develop into a player down the line. A Class AAA
all-state player and a member of Countdown to Signing Day's All-South third
team. Considered one of country's top 25 guards by Rivals.com.
• Marcus
Washington, 6-0, 210, LB, Keysville (Burke County): The first player to
commit to the Bulldogs also became the first player to fax in his letter of
intent on Wednesday. May have to wait a while to play, though since he's at a
position with some depth. Had 422 career tackles at Burke County High. Had 79
solo tackles and 46 assists as senior.
• Kade
Weston, 6-5, 316, DT, Red Bank, N.J. (Red Bank Regional): Is expected to
battle Jeffrey Owens for immediate spot in Georgia's tackle rotation.
Both could end up playing right away. Weston is considered the third-best
defensive tackle in the country after recording 79 tackles as a senior.

Following is an excerpt from the Unofficial Georgia Bulldog
Recruiting Grapevine. I think he does a great job summarizing the success of
this year's recruiting:
GRAPEVINE SPECIAL : OK folks, what grade do you give the 2003 UGA
football signee class? No need for me to throw out a grade for you; some
of you would just agree—some of you would just disagree. So, let’s just
test your crystal ball today. You do the grading!! Consider these facts,
and you make the call.
--UGA signed an All-American RB—Kregg Lumpkin receives the highest
star rating (5 star) available by both Rivals & The Insiders—both
consider him the #2 RB in America. Then kick in the versatile and solid
Danny Ware for fullback duties—don’t kid yourself—many others were
interested in Mr. Ware’s football abilities.
--UGA signed an All-American WR—Sean Bailey, a 5 star WR—both Rivals
& The Insiders consider him the #4 WR in America. Then kick in TJ
Gartrell, a SuperPrep All-Dixie team member (now you tell me how many
teams would say “NO” to a WR the quality of TJ?)
--UGA signed an All-American DB—Paul Oliver, still another 5 star
prospect—both Rivals & The Insiders consider him to be in the top 5 CBs
in America (Rivals considers him to be the #1 CB in America). Then kick
in versatile Thomas Flowers, another SuperPrep All-Dixie team member who
had a ton of folks very interested in his talents on both sides of the
ball—Further, kick in Mikey Henderson, the lightning fast athlete who is
a 2 year All-State football player and an All-State trackster; Mikey can
also play on either side of the ball.
--Is there anybody even close to signing the LBer class UGA signed
yesterday? If so, please let us know ASAP. There’s All-American Desmond
Williams with a 4 star rating by both Rivals and The Insiders. Desmond
in certainly considered by most to be in the top 10 inside LBers in
America. Then comes Super Southern 100 Danny Verdun, another 4 star LBer
who is considered by most to be in the top 15 inside LBers in America.
And, then comes 2 year All-State football player Dana Graydon, still
another 4 star LBer who is considered by most to be among the top 15
outside LBers in America. And, then comes 2 year All-State football
player Marcus Howard who is considered by many to be among the top 32
LBers in America as a 3 star prospect (and folks, my crystal ball just
started blinking brightly on that one—my crystal ball is saying the
recruiting services missed the boat a tad on this lightning fast MVP
player—Mr. Howard is going to prove just how good he is very soon). And,
then comes Jarvis Jackson (a Metro Super 11 player & Metro Defensive
Player of the Year), another 3 star fast and hard hitting LBer, who is
considered by many to be among the top 35 outside LBers in America
(another one causing my crystal ball to blink erratically). That my
friends, is quite a group of backers!! Oh, and did I mention Odell
Thurman, the very promising young UGA player of a year ago who now
returns to compete immediately for a starters’ job?
--Is there anybody even close to signing the TE class UGA signed
yesterday? Again, if so, please let us know. There’s former 5 star/Super
Southern 100 (and All-American if I recall) Leonard Pope, arguably the
best TE in the South in 2002. Leonard returns a year stronger and
bigger. Then comes Super Southern 100 Coleman Watson, arguably the best
TE in the South in 2003, and considered by most to be among the top 15
TEs in America. And, then comes versatile 3 star Trahern Holden,
considered by most to be among the top 50 TEs in America. Outstanding
trio there my fellow Dawg friends!!
--You’d be hard pressed to name many teams having an OL group of
signees better than UGAs. After all, there’s All-American 4 star Zeb
McKinzey, arguably the best interior OL in the entire South, who many
consider to be among the top 15 OL prospects in America. Then comes
Super Southern 100 4 star Trey Chandler, an elite OT prospect in the
South, who most consider to be in the top dozen OTs in America. Then
there is All-Stater 3 star Fernando Velasco, considered by many to be
among the top 40 prospects in America at his OL position. Then there’s
All-State 3 star James Lee, considered by many to be among the top 60 in
the US at his OL position. And, then comes All-State 3 star Nick Jones,
considered by many to be among the top 55 prospects in America at his OL
position. And, then comes All-State 3 star Ken Shackleford, who is
considered to be among the top 50 prospects in America at his OL
position. And then comes All-State 2 star Tommy Gainous, considered to
be among the top 130 OL prospects in America. That’s seven OL folks—UGA
certainly filled their needs here number-wise!!
--UGA signed one DL prospect for 2003—but with the Dawgs 3 and 4 deep
in this area, was it critical that they sign more in 2003? And the one
they got, 4 star Super Southern 100 Richard Cook was considered by many
to be in the top 10 DEs in America. Mr. Cook has all the talent in the
world!! Just in case, versatile Ken Shackleford could play on the
defensive front.
--Let’s not overlook the specialists. UGA lost their kick-off man and
punter, but All-State 3 star Andy Bailey, who is considered by most to
be among the top 25 kickers in America, will be given a shot a both jobs
this Fall.
--UGA signed no QBs, but I think you need to ask yourself if the
Dawgs really needed to sign one in 2003?
OK, time for you to grade the 2003 UGA football signees. Remember
now, try to put just a tad of emphasis on UGA’s recruiting needs for
2003—that will help you come up with a more honest and accurate grade.
By the way, I was tough on the Dawgs---no A+ from me—no sir—they just
got an A for very good from me (sarcasm intended folks). If you get into
the B range with your grade, I strongly suggest you go back and read the
above facts again, and give it another try. If then you again end up in
the B range, then kindly pour your half empty glass of sour milk out,
pour yourself a glass of fresh milk, and retry once again. Of course,
all of this is speculation on paper—the real grade for the class would
be in reality and can more accurately be determined 3 or 4 years from
now—but who will care about it then, we’ll all be too excited about the
2007 UGA signees at that time!!
Seriously folks, I rate UGA’s class as a solid A. One thing I am
seeing that really impresses me. Coach Mark Richt is proving that
controlling our Peach State is his top recruiting priority—this is his
second consecutive year of doing so. He truly believes that by getting
15 or so of the State’s top prospects annually, UGA will be in the
championship hunt with regularity. That’s good news, because controlling
the Peach State next year will be the toughest challenge Coach Richt has
had to do thus far. I say that for these two reasons: (1) it sure
appears the State of Georgia will be more loaded (especially quantity)
with talent in 2004 than it was these past two years, AND (2) Coach
Richt will have far less scholarships to deal out next year as compared
to the last two years. One other thing Coach Richt did yesterday that
was impressive to those that really understand the 85/25 numbers game.
Attrition would have probably taken care of the situation if he had
signed 25 yesterday. But he proved he would only spend that ship on a
super blue chipper like an Ernie Sims—and when that didn’t pan out, the
man wisely stopped at 24 signees—saving that extra ship for these next
two years when ships will be harder to come by, and may be better spent
down the road when ships become a premium!! That my fellow Dawg friends
is thinking ahead, which is still another essential factor in successful
football recruiting!!
